Wines

Our wines represent the highest and generally the most famous expression of the Cuneo region. Cuneo and wine are two inseparable realities. Cuneo , the land of prestigious wines, is among the top producers for the number of Aoc and Aocg wines produced and vines with guaranteed origin. The most famous wine in the world, Barolo, comes from the Cuneo region. Wine growing in Cuneo , exclusively in the hilly areas, develops in Langhe and Roero, extending to the Doglianese and Monregalese areas as well as some hills in the Saluzzo area. The rows of vines portray an enthralling and suggestive landscape, marked by ancient castles and small villages that cling to the hilltops. It is exactly from the wines that the values of quality and tradition have been rediscovered and extended to other food products, and this has become a cultural movement.

The quality of the wines starts in the vineyards and the experience of the wine growers, who continue to produce wine, respecting tradition, but at the same time considering new tendencies. Evidence of this tradition is found in the richness of the vines, based fundamentally on native grape varieties, the result of a wine-growing region that has grown over the years. This is the case of the Nebbiolo species, father of the great wines that have given the region of Cuneo worldwide fame, then Dolcetto, given this name because of the sweet taste of its grapes, but the father of vigorous dry-tasting wines such as Barbera.

Over 16,000 grape varieties are grown in the province of Cuneo , with a grape production slightly below 1.5 million quintals which, after being processed, produces over 1 million hl of wine. Approx. 800,000 hl of these are AOC (quality) or AOCG wines.

5 AOCG wines are produced in the Cuneo region: Barolo, Barbaresco, Asti and Moscato d’Asti, Roero, which also includes Roero Arneis, and the most recent Dogliani or Dolcetto of Dogliani Superiore. There are 12 AOC wines which become 33 counting the various collective Aoc types: Alta Langa, Barbera d’Alba, Cisterna d’Asti, Colline Saluzzesi, Dolcetto d’Alba, Dolcetto delle Langhe Monregalesi, Dolcetto di Dogliani, Dolcetto di Diano d’Alba, Langhe, Nebbiolo d’Alba, Piemonte, Pinerolese, Verduno Pelaverga.

For a correct approach to wine and to the oenological world, we can start from the Regional Wine Cellars, all situated in prestigious environments, five of which are in the province: the Enoteca Regionale Cavour of Grinzane Cavour, Enoteca Regionale del Barolo of Barolo, Enoteca Regionale del Barbaresco situated in Barbaresco, Enoteca Regionale Colline del Moscato di Mango, l’Enoteca Regionale del Roero of Canale d’Alba. For a vast panorama of the wines of the different areas and for selective purchasing, you can visit the Wine Shops (Botteghe del Vino) and the Local Wine Cellars (Cantine Comunali).
